  • Prioritise the safety of the patient.
  • If you suspect the victim is in immediate danger, notify the police.
  • See the patient alone even if he/she is accompanied.
  • Take your time and listen.
  • Explain options.
  • Record as much information as possible.
  • Carefully consider who you might need to share information with.
  • Let the patient make the decisions, but take into account age and capacity.
