What Else Can You Do?
Discuss options available with the patient.
Provide information on the NationalReferral Mechanism and contact one of the First Responders on their behalf if required.
Make sure that they are aware of the implications of this e.g., if they have insecure immigration status, the case will be referred to the UK Border Agency.
Offer a further appointment.
When you are concerned that they won't come back:
Maximise your time with the patient.
Think about how you can offer as much information as possible about their health condition and treatment. Make sure it can't be found easily by others, e.g. provide helpline numbers on paper that can be hidden in clothing.
If applicable and possible, provide a complete regimen of prescribed medication in that single encounter - assuming they will not return for follow-up treatment and assessment.
You can find advice on Agencies who can help you under "Further Information and Additional Resources" near the end of the course.
